The Go game pictured to the left is
described in the Novel Prize winning book "The Master of Go", by Yasunari Kawabata.
The English edition is translated by Edward G. Seidensticker. It depicts a real
game played between two professional go players, one whose professional name was
"Master Shusai", or just "The Master", and Kitani Minoru, an up and coming professional
player of his time. This Match was played in 1938, over the course of several months. The total time taken by white (Shusai) in this match was 19 hours, 57 minutes. Black (Kitani) used 34 hours, 19 minutes. This game was won by Black by 5 points. It should also be noted that this was Master Shusai's last game. He died shortly after. He was 67. |
